Race Day Course Workers – What to Expect

You know the saying, “It takes a village…” Well, it certainly takes a village to put on an open road race! Each year we rely on dozens of volunteers to keep the race running smoothly and look out for everyone’s safety. Our race day course workers are essential to a successful race day.

Here’s what our course workers can expect on race day and a few tips for staying as comfortable as possible while out on the road.

Course workers will pick up their radios and flags at the volunteer breakfast on Saturday at 6 a.m. They will also receive a short briefing with instructions and potential hazards to watch for.

At 7 a.m., course workers will leave for their assigned course position. Some course positions have permission to drive and park a vehicle on the landowner’s property; however, some do not. Those that do not will be shuttled to their assigned course position and also picked up at the conclusion of the race.

You cannot leave the course until the race has concluded, usually by about 2 p.m., but be prepared to stay longer if there are weather or race delays.

Some items you will find helpful to bring include a chair, umbrella (not red or yellow as those are flag colors), water, lunch and snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray.
